Episode 16 – Jessica Porten

In this week's episode:

Well, I got my referral. No appointment for a month, but at least I have a name.

The news this week is, as you might expect, the school shooting in Florida.

"The concept that mental illness is a precursor to violent behavior is nonsense," said Dr. Louis Kraus, forensic psychiatry chief at Chicago's Rush University Medical College. "The vast majority of gun violence is not attributable to mental illness."

My guest this week is Jessica Porten. Jessica made headlines when she was given a police escort to the hospital after asking her OB about treatment for post partum depression.
She's also worked to support legislation that would help mothers with postpartum depression.

Episode Twelve – Slye and Elle, Redux (Part 2)

In this week’s episode:

I got my 23 and Me results back! It’s mostly things I knew, but there were a few surprises.

My Husband, Slye, is with me in the studio today.  He shares some tips about staying mentally healthy during the holidays, and we discuss his family’s history with mental illness.

In news, we discuss a recent article about the causes (plural) of bipolar disorder.  http://www.futurity.org/bipolar-disorder-causes-1632792/

Here’s another article on the same study.  It’s actually a bit more readable than the first.  https://www.bustle.com/p/what-causes-bipolar-disorder-scientists-think-theyve-found-7-potential-sources-of-the-illness-7618175

This week’s interview is the continuation of last week’s discussion with Elle.

I’ve also had some requests for a way to donate to the podcast, so I’ve added a PayPal Donate button to the site.  Thank you all for your support!
